Statue Monument

Sudan Shriners held their 92nd Winter Ceremonial on January 25-26, 2008 in New Bern.  It is an annual celebration of the charitable and fraternal work by 6,400 eastern North Carolina Shriners.

This year, members hosted a “Statue Dedication” at the Shrine temple on Broad Street that symbolized the full extent of their philanthropic work — aiding physically challenged children.

The statue is based on a 1970 photograph depicting a Shriner carrying a little girl in one hand and holding her crutches in the other. The picture was named “Editorial Without Words,” by photographer Randy Dieter, who was covering an annual Shriners’ outing for handicapped children in Evansville, Ind. The photo has been the national logo for Shriners Hospitals for Children for decades.
